Notes from the Nominators

What makes your town special? Tell us about the landscape, the urban design, the culture, the people, or anything else that sets your place apart.

Lancaster is incredibly walkable, which shapes daily life in a meaningful way. People can move easily between neighborhoods, shops and gathering spaces without always relying on a car.

The city also has a strong arts culture and a diverse food scene that reflects the creativity and character of the community. Above all, there is a deep sense of local pride. People care about Lancaster, and that pride shows up in how they support local businesses and show up for one another.

In a Strong Town, neighbors work in collaboration with city technical staff and elected officials to address the community's needs. How are neighbors in your town getting involved and making an impact?

While I’m not yet involved in the local Strong Towns conversation, I have friends who are, and I plan to join them soon. Beyond that, Lancaster has an extremely neighborly culture.

There are active neighborhood groups and a strong volunteer spirit throughout the city. When there’s a need, people step up — and sometimes they step up even before they’re asked. That everyday willingness to help and participate is part of what makes the community strong.

Strong Towns don't wait for the perfect time or for a cash infusion to take action. Tell us about a time when people in your town observed a struggle your community experienced, and addressed that struggle swiftly, using the tools at hand.

Recently, Gallery Row — a street with many small businesses — experienced a sidewalk closure that lasted more than a year. The prolonged closure created real challenges for those businesses.

In response, members of the community made a point to support those shops and restaurants and were vocal about the need for better planning in the future. Residents also engaged with local government, advocating for improved communication and contingency planning if similar closures happen again. It was a clear example of neighbors rallying around small businesses and pushing for constructive solutions.

What about your town inspires you to keep working to make it stronger?

We love Lancaster! That simple truth drives a lot of what people do here.

There’s a shared desire to see the city thrive and to make sure it remains a strong, welcoming place for everyone who calls it home. That collective care for the community is what inspires continued involvement and effort.
